Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of surgical management of dysphagia after radiotherapy in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS:14 NPC patients with severe dysphagia after radiotherapy received surgery from 2004 to 2009. Seven of them were treated with cricopharyngeal sphincterotomy and the other 7 received cervical esophagostomy. RESULTS:Of the 7 cases treated with cricopharyngeal sphincterotomy,5 got improved in quality of life, 2 were ineffective and received gastrostomy. For the patients received cervical esophagostomy, the body weight got increased and the life quality improved considerably in all of them. CONCLUSION:Cricopharyngeal sphincterotomy and cervical esophagostomy are effective surgical means to traeat dysphagia after radiotherapy in NPC patients, which can significantly improve their quality of life.
