Abstract:Objective To observe the clinical effect of the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) on patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) accompanied by laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Methods From October 2008 to March 2011, 26 patients diagnosed having OSAHS accompanied by LPR with polysomnography (PSG) were given Pantoprazole sodium entericcoated capsules orally 20 mg twice per day for 3 months. PSG was then rechecked and the apneahypopnea index (AHI) was obtained to evaluate the therapeutic effect. Results The average AHI values before and after treatment were 50.52±19.61 and 29.47±14.15 respectively, with a decline up to (36.23±12.32)%. The difference of AHI before and after treatment was statistically significant (t=2.543, P=0.02). Their symptoms and inflammatory signs of LPR got improved. Conclusion LPR may have some direct correlation with OSAHS. Oral administration of PPI has positive effect on OSAHS accompanied by LPR.
