Abstract:Abstract:ObjectiveTo determine the incidence of secretory otitis media (SOM) in children with adenoid hypertrophy and prognosis of SOM after adenoidectomy.Methods1382 children with adenoid hypertrophy treated with adenoidectomy were included. They were tested with lateral nasopharyngeal radiograph, acoustic impedance test and pure tone test before operation. The incidence of SOM was calculated and the correlation between adenoid hypertrophy and SOM was analyzed statistically.ResultsOf all the 1382 cases, SOM was confirmed in 479 children (892 ears) with an incidence rate of 34.66%. Three months after adenoidectomy, 528 ears were cured (59.19%, 528/892), and 298 ears got improved (33.41%, 298/892) with a total effective rate of 92.60%.ConclusionAdenoid hypertrophy is a major cause of SOM in children. With advantages of simplicity, good effect and rare complications, endoscopic adenoidectomy plays an important role in the treatment of pediatric SOM.
