Abstract:ObjectiveTo sum up the experience for the diagnosis and management of nasal foreign body in children.MethodsClinical data of 117 pediatric patients with nasal foreign body was analyzed retrospectively.ResultsOf all 117 cases, the foreign body was removed under topical anesthesia in 98, and endoscopically under general anesthesia in 19. In 8 children with alkaline button battery, intraoperative and postoperative perforation of nasal septum was observed in 2 cases and one respectively. Postoperative rhinosinusitis occurred in 16 children, which was cured with nasal steroid sprays, antibiotics and secretolytic drugs. Nasal adhesion occurred in 7 cases and got cured by laser excision.ConclusionsThe parents and caregivers should be well educated about the potential hazards associated with nasal foreign body. Once nasal foreign body happens, timely and proper management is essential for good prognosis. As to alkaline button battery in nose, early removal, nasal irrigation and drug therapy of wound are indispensible to avoid occurrence and exacerbation of nasal complications.
